Torture Architect Argues For Indefinite Detention of Americans

ACLU: “Nothing short of chilling”

In the aftermath of Barack Obama’s Presidential Policy Directive which forbids controversial provisions of the National Defense Authorization Act from being used against lawful residents, a former architect of the infamous Bush torture program today testified in favor of indefinite detention for US citizens.

Following the release of a White House “fact sheet” which announced that “Section 1022 does not apply to U.S. citizens, and the President has decided to waive its application to lawful permanent residents arrested in the United States,” Steven G. Bradbury, former head of the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) in the United States Department of Justice under the Bush administration, testified today that the law should be applied to American citizens in order to deal with “homegrown terrorists”.

In his position as OLC head, Bradbury is widely acknowledged as one of the primary architects of the Bush torture program, having provided legal opinions that justified the kind of abuse that came to light in the aftermath of the Abu Ghraib scandal, which included torture by hanging, beating prisoners to death, raping women, and sodomizing detainees with batons and phosphorescent tubes.

Bradbury told a Senate Judiciary Committee that legislation which would limit the arbitrary application of indefinite detention provisions, the Due Process Guarantee Act, was dangerous because it would prevent US citizens labeled “enemy combatants,” from being interrogated by the military.

“If we capture on our soil a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident who is such an enemy recruit and has been actively involved in carrying out or otherwise aware of an unfolding plot by a foreign power against the United States, this proposed legislation could seriously impede our ability to gather critical intelligence from that combatant through military questioning,” Bradbury told the committee. “By requiring that criminal charges be brought against the detainee as a  condition of this continued detention, the [Due Process Guarantee Act] would threaten to disrupt the practical opportunity to conduct such intelligence gathering.”

In response, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.), who voted against the NDAA, requested that Bradbury’s involvement with the Bush torture scandal be included in the record.

“It’s nothing short of chilling that the Senate Judiciary Committee would have as a witness one of the architects of the torture program,” American Civil Liberties Union legislative counsel Chris Anders told Raw Story. “This is a person who wrote several memos that provide legal justification for the torture program during the Bush administration, and wrote memos on how to try to circumvent legal protections that Congress had put in place to block the use of torture and abuse of detainees.”

“For Congress to be relying on someone who has shown so little disregard for the law that he would say that it’s legally okay to waterboard people and use other torture tactics against them is remarkable. It’s remarkable and it’s wrong.”

However, Sen. Lindsey Graham supported Bradbury’s position, arguing that “The homeland is part of the battlefield,” and that so-called enemy combatants, even if they are American citizens, should be treated as terrorists.

As we explained in our previous article, although Obama’s PPD on exempting Americans from being subject to indefinite detention represents a worthy victory for civil libertarians, it comes after the administration itself demanded such provisions be applied to US citizens in the first place.

It also provides no guarantee that a future administration, which could be in office in less than a year, will not use the ‘kidnapping provisions’ against US citizens. This is all the more reason to support efforts by states such as Virginia and Utah to repudiate the NDAA altogether.

“I Won’t Pay Movement” Spreading Across Europe

I watched the video for this a few days ago and it got me thinking. The gas consumption of the US is down right now but we see gas prices still going up. The prices are obviously not being based on supply and demand and more people in the US are using public transportation these days.

Phoenix just announced they will be cutting more bus routes in the next six months. So we have more people than ever depending on public transportation yet they want to cut routes (which in turn means job cuts as well) and the prices go up almost every year as well. It just doesn’t make any sense!

Leftists shine when it comes to direct action. And that’s what they are doing in Greece and elsewhere in Europe in response to bankster imposed austerity measures – direct action at the point of highway robbery.

In the above video, we see students and unemployed workers shutting down public transportation toll collection. It’s called the “I Won’t Pay” movement. It began last year in Greece and has spread to other locales on the continent, including Spain and Sweden.

Thousands of Greeks are now refusing to validate their public transit tickets following well-publicized protests by leftists and communists in response to ticket price hikes by the government.

Some believe this sort of civil disobedience is ineffective and merely theatrical, but it is a good way for people to make a point – they are opposed to the state acting as an enforcer for the IMF, the World Bank and the international bankers.

Maybe Texans outraged by the Trans Texas Corridor and proposed toll roads should think about following the lead of Greek leftists.

Israel, Kurdish fighters destroyed Iran nuclear facility, email released by WikiLeaks claims

Well geeze, if Iran has no more nuclear capability then what are we so damn worried about? This is intel the US government would have had long before the internet got a hold of it so we can now clearly see the US wants war and will make up excuses to get it.

The mega-leaks website, WikiLeaks, has partnered with the hackers cooperative Anonymous, to publish internal emails of the American strategic intelligence company Stratfor. In one of the hacked emails, Stratfor officials discuss information obtained from one of their sources who reports that Israeli commandos, in cooperation with Kurdish fighters, have destroyed Iranian nuclear installations.

According to the emails, among Stratfor’s clients are American government agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Marine Corps, the Dow Chemical company, for whom Stratfor is alleged to have kept tabs on activists fighting the company for compensation over the Indian Bhopal chemical plant disaster in 1984, and defense giants Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon.

In one of the emails from November 2011, Startfor officials discuss the explosion at an Iranian missile base near Tehran and quote a source who “was asked what he thought of reports that the Israelis were preparing a military offensive against Iran. Response: I think this is a diversion. The Israelis already destroyed all the Iranian nuclear infrastructure on the ground weeks ago.”

One company analyst responded dismissively to the possibility of an Israeli attack having already taken place, asking: “How and when did the Israelis destroy the infra on the ground?”

Wyoming Introduces ‘Doomsday Bill’ To Prepare For Collapse of Federal Government

With the secret “continuity of government” plans the federal government already has in place, I think it would be wise for each and every state to set up their own plans. The federal government will replace any and every elected official in each state with military personnel. As marshal law ensues, your rights will be completely gone and this is what they (the top 1%) are waiting for!

Legislation lays plans for alternate currency in aftermath of US dollar devaluation

Lawmakers in Wyoming have introduced a bill that would compel the state to prepare for a complete collapse of the federal government, laying plans for an alternate currency, a standing army raised via a military draft, and an aircraft carrier.

“House Bill 85 passed on first reading by a voice vote. It would create a state-run government continuity task force, which would study and prepare Wyoming for potential catastrophes, from disruptions in food and energy supplies to a complete meltdown of the federal government,” reports the Wyoming Star-Tribune. Wyoming state flag

Compared to the rest of the country, Wyoming’s public finances are in a relatively good condition, a fact that has spurred lawmakers to protect the state against contagion from other areas that could develop in the aftermath of a massive financial collapse.

The bill (PDF) lays the groundwork for how the state would respond in the event of a sudden devaluation of the dollar or “a situation in which the federal government has no effective power or authority over the people of the United States.”

“I don’t think there’s anyone in this room today what would come up here and say that this country is in good shape, that the world is stable and in good shape — because that is clearly not the case,” state Rep. Lorraine Quarberg, R-Thermopolis, said. “To put your head in the sand and think that nothing bad’s going to happen, and that we have no obligation to the citizens of the state of Wyoming to at least have the discussion, is not healthy.”

The bill has to pass two more House votes before it can be considered by the Senate. If passed, the task force would have until December 1, 2012 to submit a report to the governor detailing the continuity of government plan.

FEMA Puts Out Contract For Emergency Camps to House “Displaced Citizens”

They really are setting up these death camps folks; this is not a joke! President Obama signed the NDAA in to law which says you, an American citizen, can be dragged away and locked up with no trial and held indefinitely. Where do you think they will be housing all these “home grown terrorists”?

Solicitation calls for camps to be ready for occupancy within 72 hours

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is looking for contractors to construct temporary emergency camps inside the United States which can be ready for occupancy within a 72 hour time period and used to house emergency responders as well as “displaced citizens”.FEMA

The National Responder Support Camp contract, posted on the Federal Business Opportunities website, calls on contractors to “provide all necessary supervision, professional staff, labor support, material, supplies and equipment as necessary to make a RSC within a disaster-impacted area anywhere within the CONUS (Continental United States) within 72 hours after notification.”

The camps are primarily designed to house emergency responders, but will also be utilized to shelter “displaced citizens,” who will be “given the first opportunities for employment within the camp,” according to the solicitation. The camps will be able to service up to 2,000 people at one time.

As well as natural disasters, the 72-hour camps are designed to deal with terrorist attacks, National Response Framework activities of federal agencies, National Special Security Events, “or any other situation where FEMA or an agency working through FEMA needs a RSC.”

The camps will be secured with fencing and barricades that will also serve to create areas that are “off limits” to certain occupants. Entry to the camp will be controlled through a photo ID system for all occupants and visitors.

Medical treatment facilities, dining facilities, mobile showers and “morale welfare and recreation” facilities are all required as part of the contract.

FEMA’s latest efforts to satisfy the demand for emergency camps represents a continuation of preparations on behalf of the federal government to prepare for civil emergencies and potential social disorder.

Last December, Department of Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano directed ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to prepare for a mass influx of immigrants into the United States, calling for the plan to deal with the “shelter” and “processing” of large numbers of people.

In 2006, Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root was contracted by Homeland Security to build detention centers designed to deal with “an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S,” or the rapid development of unspecified “new programs” that would require large numbers of people to be interned.

Last year we received a leaked memo from a state government employee detailing KBR’s efforts to hire subcontractors to provide services required for temporary “emergency environment” camps located in five regions of the United States, indicating that many of the camps have now been constructed and are ready for use.

The construction of new detention camps inside the United States has provoked fears that the facilities could also be used to intern American citizens in the aftermath of a national emergency.

Rex 84, short for Readiness Exercise 1984, was established under the pretext of a “mass exodus” of illegal aliens crossing the Mexican/US border, the same pretense used in the language of the KBR request for services.

During the Iran-Contra hearings in 1987, however, it was revealed that the program was a secretive “scenario and drill” developed by the federal government to suspend the Constitution, declare martial law, assign military commanders to take over state and local governments, and detain large numbers of American citizens determined by the government to be “national security threats.”

A provision within the National Defense Authorization Act, signed into law by President Obama on New Years Eve, hands the government power to have American citizens arrested and detained without trial.

Banker’s Insulting Waitress Tip Incites Class Warfare Between the 1% and the 99% **UPDATE!*

This is absolutely disgusting. I am hoping the name of this “banker” will come out.

By Melissa Knowles | Trending Now

Just when you may have thought the ongoing battle between the 99% and the 1% was dying down, it may have been reignited. A wealthy banker left a $1.33 tip on a $133 lunch at the True Food Kitchen restaurant in Newport Beach, California.

To add insult to injury the word “tip” was circled on the receipt, and the banker wrote “get a real job” on the bill. The picture of the receipt was taken and uploaded to the blog Future Ex-Banker by a person who was dining with the anonymous banker. As expected, the blog received a lot of attention and has now been taken down. The author of the blog wrote, “mention the 99% in my boss’ presence and feel his wrath. So proudly does he wear his 1% badge of honor that he tips exactly 1% every time he feels the server doesn’t sufficiently bow down to his holiness.”

People online who had a chance to see the blog post before it went offline and those who have been made aware of it on social media outlets are outraged. One person called the tip a “tale of greed and contempt,” and another referred to it as “arrogance personified.” The Web’s general reaction to this story is eerily similar to an almost identical 1% vs. 99% scenario that took place last fall. In Washington state, a waitress received a tip of no money and advice scrawled on the receipt that told her she could “stand to lose a few pounds.”

It’s been found that this was a HOAX. Apparently the “receipt” that was originally posted was Photoshop edited.

Banker’s 1% Tip is a Hoax; Real Receipt Obtained

Yesterday we reported a story about a banker who allegedly left a $1.33 tip on a $133 lunch bill at True Food Kitchen in Newport Beach, California. In addition, he added a ‘tip’ to “get a real job.” It was meant to be a dig from the 1% to the 99%, and the story, as well as the image, were shared all over the Web. We posted it on our show and received thousands of comments about the insulting remark written on the receipt. real receipt

After contacting the restaurant, its spokesperson Jami Reagan told us the receipt was Photoshopped, and they have the original receipt to prove it. Trending Now has received the original copy of the receipt, and we can confirm that it was in fact digitally altered. Reagan said the reason that the issue was not corrected quicker is because the corporate offices were closed over the weekend.

The original receipt does not contain the tip “Get a real job.” Also, the real bill was for $33.54, not $133.54, and the tip given was $7, not $1.33.

The blog that originally posted the receipt, Future Ex-Banker, was taken down Friday as well. True Food Kitchen also says that  the receipt was not altered by anyone on their staff, adding that they would never post any guest’s personal information.

ACTA Will End the Internet As We Know It

The main stream media is giving the public bits and pieces of what the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is about but it’s being done so in a way that simply makes no sense. It’s high time sense was made of it so you, the American people, are educated about what it is and how it will ultimately affect you and your experiences online.

ACTA is a “planned plurilateral trade agreement between 38 nations. According to the participants the aim is to reduce more efficiently the alleged rise of product piracy. Every single negotiation round was held secretly without access for the public or even members of the European Parliament (EP), but industrial lobbyists, like members of the IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) had access to the agreement drafts. Such methods are not compatible with democratic standards and are leading towards corruption in the global society.”Stop ACTA

So what does this mean in plain English? Today many companies see online file sharing of their programs, music, software and whatever else as a “loss”. ACTA is basically an agreement between the participating countries to go after anyone found to be sharing materials illegally and prosecute them. It’s a “promise”, if you will, to stop illegal file sharing but there’s more to it than that.

“ACTA is an agreement which was negotiated behind the back of the public and should be decided regardless of a sustainable development of the society, civil rights and required democratic processes. Apparently this agreement has the target to introduce extreme changes of principles on a global level, without participation of the international community or even the concerned citizen of the participating nations.”

These closed door negotiations that include nothing of the US democratic process should be considered ILLEGAL. Where PIPA and SOPA failed, ACTA has a much better chance of succeeding because it completely cuts off the people and relies solely on the “government” to make the decisions.

Unfortunately when this door is opened it will also open the flood gates of internet monitoring. How else do you think the powers that be would find people sharing things on the internet? The NSA (National Security Agency) is already monitoring more material each day than what comprises the Library of Congress! They monitor social media sites as well as emails, texts and phone calls. ACTA is simply going to give the US government enogh power to make their internet monitoring total and complete.

So you may still be asking yourself, “How will this affect me?” Right now you use a search engine to find things online. We’ll use Yahoo as an example. So let’s say I wanted to find out the name of a song I saw in a commercial on TV. I go to Yahoo, type in the car manufacturers name and maybe the type of car along with “car commercial” and then click “Search”.  Right now you will most likely see a TON of search results. Some may contain the car commercial video itself, some may contain lyrics to the song, others may contain clips of the song or the full song itself.

ACTA will stop these types of search results. Back in my day we used the library and books for research but today my daughter uses the internet for damn near everything school related. She just did a report which entailed she write a “journal” as an Irish immigrant. I am part Irish so we used the internet to research our family name and family crest. We were able to get the family crest to include in her report. ACTA will stop this type of activity.

Are you starting to see the bigger picture here? The way in which the internet is used today will change (for the worse) forever. No more pictures, videos or music. You’ll be lucky if you can find even a written article. The age of technology and information that we live in now is about to end.
